Introducing Michael Antony! this new, emerging artist will be releasing some exciting new music this year. Since playing the piano from the young age of 6, Michael is an accomplished musician with an ear for a range of genres within the pop realm. His unique voice and musical style is what will also set him apart from the crowd. His approach to songwriting is always personal but with an elevated and memorable twist. It is likely that you will not be able to get his lyrics out of your head after listening. As an eccentric live performer, Michael never fails to entertain and create a special, unforgettable theatrical show, something we certainly look forward to once live music returns. Today, we talk about his new release “No Relax”, let’s have a chat with Michael!

YMX: Hey Michael, how is it going? some of our readers might not be familiar with your project, how would you describe yourself, in a few words?

Michael: I’m a Singer, Songwriter and Musician from London. I write songs from the soul.

YMX: Your current work is the result of a long journey; What first drew you to making music?

Michael: Well, I’ve playing playing the piano since is was about 6 years old and I have been a very musical person ever since. I was always fascinated from a young age with how music can affect the vibrations in your body and soul, and how it can influence your mood and your mind.

YMX: What would be your dream collaboration?

Michael: If I had the opportunity, I would love, love, love to work with Sam Sparro. I think they are an amazing artist, and I’ve followed them and their work for a while now. I’m a little bit obsessed really. But not many people seem to be familiar with Sam Sparro’s recent music and it’s a shame because it is SO good.

YMX: You recently released ‘No Relax’. Can you tell us how that song came about?

Michael: So ‘No Relax’ is a song that I started writing last year during the first ‘lockdown’ as we now refer to it. The world was in a very surreal situation and we were all experiencing it as it was happening. I had this overwhelming sense of anxiety and i’m sure a lot of people were also feeling something similar. Admittedly, I couldn’t stop watching the news or checking my phone and scrolling through twitter. I don’t know whether I was trying to find out the truth or if I was looking for a distraction. All I know is that it seemed like it was never going to end. It was relentless. It was – as I discovered – ‘No Relax’. I wanted to create a song that would capture that sense of uneasiness and friction. This isn’t the sort of song to incite a sense a calm. Quite the opposite. Rather than offering an escape, I hope that my lyrics will be a blunt reminder of the reality of our world today.

YMX: What inspires your songwriting work?

Michael: Anything and everything! I always carry a little notebook for ideas and lyrics that pop up when I’m about doing other things. I do like to take subjects and topics that are sometimes overlooked and then elevate them into a song that is beautiful and exciting. When I begin writing a song I never really know where I’m going to end up and I guess that is the fun part about it! I believe you can write a song about anything. Nothing is off limits.

YMX: We are all missing live music at the moment. Once on the other side, which music venue would you choose for your first gig?

Michael: I was very fortunate to perform live in London last year after the first lockdown! It was my debut as a solo artist and an experience I will always remember. It was so exciting. I actually have a gig already lined up for when things re-open! I will be performing live at the Underbelly in Hoxton Square on June 17th. I’m already re-vamping my set for the show. I can’t wait to be on that stage. Tickets are available here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/inpop-presents-the-underbelly-tickets-146599983497?aff=MichaelAntony

YMX: What’s your band strategy in terms of music promotion? Direct-2-fans or via the “big dogs”?

Michael: As an independent artist during this time, I think it’s really exciting to explore all avenues that are available! What may work for some might not work for others. But I do think it is hard to make your voice heard over the rest of the crowd. That’s why I believe having a unique point of view isn’t so bad. It is frustrating though right now how we are not able to socialise and meet new people due to the restrictions because I really do thrive off of other people’s energy.

YMX: Finally, what are your plans for the future? (releases, gigs etc.)

Michael: I have many plans for this year. I’ve just released my debut single ‘No Relax’. And there will be another song coming out very very soon…. I’ve written a whole collection of material but last year I was very lucky to be able to produce an EP that is coming out later this year. I’m very proud of it and it has been a work in progress for about 3 years, if I think about it. These songs are remnants of parts of my life, and I can’t wait for people to hear the complete project.
