K1 – ‘Light in the Dark’ Interview

Jack Kirwan is a rapper/singer/producer born in Enfield in
Meath, but he grew up in Naas, Kildare. He recently released his new single “Light in the Dark” in collaboration with producer Dylan Fagan. The song was released on March 5th. Inspired by old school rap, K1 aptly brings us light in dark times with an incredible track full of vibes. Let’s talk to the man about it!

YMX: Hey K1, thanks for talking to us. How have these gloomy times been treating you?

K1: They’ve been good to me in a sense that I’ve more time to work on my craft and that I can learn more about myself as an artist and figure out where I want to take my music and how I want to impact my listeners. But other than that it sucks not being able to live life how you normally would.

YMX: How did you decide music was something you wanted to pursue? Are there any particular episodes that inspired you in doing so?

K1: I must of been around 9 or 10, when I first heard rap. I think it was Eminem’s “Slim Shady LP” and Nas’s “illmatic” that hooked me in. I’ve been passionate about making music ever since.

YMX: Here’s a fun game: name 3 artists, or bands, that inspire you and influence your work, and explain why:

K1: Nas, Eminem and j.Cole because they have such vivid way of story telling and really paint a picture for the listener. Also they’re all so bar heavy that you have to listen multiple times to really understand what they’re saying.

YMX: You recently released ‘Light in the Dark’. Can you tell us how that project came about?

K1: “Light in the Dark” is essentially me setting the stage for the Debut EP “More than Words”. The song is about me finding confidence in what I do and how it impacts me. Towards the end of the song the direction shifts and talks about pain from a relationship. I won’t go into too much detail about that, because like I said it’s setting the scene for the album.

YMX: How did the pandemic affect your personal music recording experience? Was it easy adjusting to working remotely?

K1: No not at all really because I’ve a home studio at my house. So basically it was business as usual .

YMX: Professional livestreams seem to be really taking over these days. Is it something you would consider doing?

K1: It would be in the future yes, I’d like to develop my catalog a little more first tho. So I really can give the best performance with a variety of songs.

YMX: Since pandemic began, online music promotion has become crucial for an artist’s growth. How important is that for you, and are there any strategies you are willing to share with our readers?

K1: It is crucial and to a certain degree I haven’t really figured it out completely yet. It’s easier to get your music out there but with so much competition it’s harder to be heard. All I can say is keep making good music and when you have that break your new fans will have so much good music to enjoy and appreciate.

YMX: Finally, what are your plans for the future?

K1: I always have new music ready, I’ve a song with James Shannon on the way titled “Same Sh*t” the song was originally released awhile back but we decided it’s to good not for a official release to Spotify etc. There will also be a remix to Drakes “Pound Cake” accompanied by a video!
