In Conversation with the Charismatic PALMTREEPRINCE and his anthemic sound

Last week we’ve had the incredible pleasure to discover the London-based Pop artist PALMTREEPRINCE, a singer born to spread positivity around the world thanks to his music. With the help of catchy productions, modern sound and addictive beats, the artist is building a strong reputation around his brand where love and other important messages are at the base of it. We’ve been completely captured by his latest single “‘BOUT US” where he focused on the importance of having a special person by your side and we wanted to discover a bit more of this talented guy that we think will make himself known worldwide really soon.

YMX: Hey Palmtreeprince, thanks for sitting down with us. What would you say to all our readers new to your project?

PALMTREEPRINCE: I appreciate you guys for having me, the pleasure is all mine. I’d like to start by saying “Hi! I’m so glad you could make it”, welcome to my story. I’m honoured to have you along for the ride but buckle up, this adventure is full of hope, love and wonder. Bring your feels, wear your smiles, and remain curious! Oh, and don’t forget your dancing shoes, you’re gonna need them.

YMX: When did you know that music was something you wanted to pursue at an artistic level?

PALMTREEPRINCE: It was the 24th of March, 2012 to be exact, the eve of my birthday. I arrived at “The O2” in Dublin with a group of friends to witness Drake’s first headline show, on the European leg of his tour. From the energy of the atmosphere to the feeling of anticipation in the air, a multitude of people came to see this one-man entertain them for about an hour. I’ll never forget that mesmerising performance. I’d been to concerts before but something about this one felt different. I felt very present and in the moment while I was there. As I observed the show, I became aware of how Drake had me hooked on to his story. He made crowd interaction look effortless, I felt like I was a part of the narrative. That whole experience served as an eye-opener for me. That day I’d seen enough to realise that not only was this what I wanted to do for the rest of my life but that it was possible to pursue it and succeed.

YMX: You recently released “‘BOUT US“. Can you tell us how that project came about?

PALMTREEPRINCE: The week after submitting my last single ‘Lo Siento’, for distribution, I wanted to get ahead of my monthly release schedule, so I began to get working on the next single. My producer, LVAE, had been working on a record for another project in his production room, next door. All I could hear were sweet sounds playing through the walls, so I started humming along to the melody, really trying to feel out the right cadence and flow, until the words “I been thinking ‘bout us! Lately” came to me. I kept singing it out loud whenever I’d hear LVAE working on it, mumbling the next line until I got “You’re the part of me I cling to daily”. Not long after I spent the next couple of days singing that line around our apartment, I got a text saying “I’ve heard enough! This is the next track, get in the booth and cut it, let’s go!”, and thus ‘‘bout us’ was born.

YMX: What is the one thing you would like people to feel while listening to this SINGLE?

PALMTREEPRINCE: THE ENERGY! This energy is like a projection of euphoria in its purest form. It’s an instant smile from the moment you press play, till you press play again. It’s that angel voice on your shoulder that points you in the direction of someone you love and says “Go on then, tell them how you really feel!”, and the devil voice agrees because the feeling is undeniable. From the lyrics right through to the production, I would love for you to immerse yourself in the entire experience. Who knows? You might find yourself in that energy.

YMX: How did the recent pandemic influence your creative process? is remote collaboration easy for you?

PALMTREEPRINCE: Fortunately for me, the pandemic was the break from reality I really needed. The world felt still, for once, and I used that moment to redefine every aspect of my life. I felt like I had enough time to explore new things; I even learned how to build a PC for my Content Creation lol. However, the best thing that came out of it all was the birth of palmtreeprince. LVAE and I have been WFH before it was a “thing thing” lol. We run a smooth in-house operation here at HQ, the perks of having our studio set up in the comfort of our own home. This actually makes remote collaboration the ideal scenario for us.

YMX: Do you feel more confident writing music alone, or within a team?

PALMTREEPRINCE: For me, it’s more about preference than it is about confidence. My process is intimate, a lot of my writing is done in that state, and solitude allows me to be vulnerable in a way that I can’t be when there are other people around. I’m very protective of that part of my creative process. I have written with other people before, it’s fun and inspiring for collaborative work, but for my own records, I prefer to create by my lonesome. If I ever need assistance with an idea I just call LVAE.

YMX: Can you name the last gig you played? Would you consider doing a livestream concert?

PALMTREEPRINCE: I’m yet to gig since I started releasing music during pandemic, so the plan is to start gigging nationwide when the circumstances change. I believe a livestream concert is a necessity! I saw that Red Bull shot their ‘Red Bull Batalla 2020’ Final in a green screen studio, keying in CGI environments with each battle. I would love to do something on a similar scale and bring people into our world with immersive audio. I’d love to innovate the livestream experience in some way. As things open up, I’d love to do something like a hybrid tour, where people that can’t make it to the show in person can get a ticket to stream it live, from home. I’d have AR kits for both audiences so it won’t matter where you are, you can get the full immersive experience either way.

YMX: Finally, what are your plans for the future? (releases, gigs etc.)

PALMTREEPRINCE: LVAE and I are really working hard on innovating the experience of music, with technologies like Oculus for VR, Dolby Atmos and Sony’s 360 Reality Audio for immersive audio, out there, we really want to bring our story to that next frontier of entertainment. If the powers that be, allow, I would also love to start touring nationwide and internationally. Connecting with people, creators, and admirers alike is the dream and I’m excited to take our sound around the planet! In the meantime remain curious because my sailing spaceship has taken off, and I’m glad you’re all aboard. A new adventure awaits us, season after season a new story will be old, and each time a new destination will be discovered. You’ve got those dancing shoes on right? Seat belts buckled up too? Perfect, welcome to the ride of a lifetime.
