The Routine – Too Many Times Review

Introducing The Routine! these London/Cambridge based 4 piece have spent the 2020 lockdown periods perfecting their sound and now are ready to make an impact into the rock scene. Inspired by the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Foo Fighters and Feeder, these guys formed the Routine following the dissolution of two previous bands and now, with a fresh new lease on life, bring us their smashing debut single “Too Many Times” which we are going to dive into today!

Comprising of Liam Palmer (Lead Vocals and Rhythm Guitar), Ben Taylor (Lead Guitar and Backing Vocals), Ben Nunn (Bass and Backing Vocals) and Mark Thomson (Drums and Percussion) previous members of popular Cambridge band The Abstracts, The Routine was formed out of the ashes of Lunar Echoes after they disbanded in 2019 due to musical differences. Giving that they formed just before the first lockdown of 2020, The Routine has yet to make their live debut on the circuit. However, with the work that they have put in over the course of 2020, they aim to bring a strong and energetic live set to as many people as the possible can across the UK. This led to the release of their debut track “Too Many Times”.

This track is a gritty, energetic guitar driven piece with raspy vocals that really resonate with the band’s “DNA mixture” as they define it, that of Dave Grohl’s raspy, emotionally powerful vocals and Franz Ferdinand’s early sound particularly. The instruments are played expertly and keep a solid cohesion all throughout the song.

Generally we are reluctant to give the true meaning behind the song in order to allow our listeners to interpret the track in the way they hear it. With that said though, Too Many Times was essentially born out having an anger and frustration from being stuck in a dead-end situation for a long time.

These are the thoughts of the band in the creation of their debut track, coming from a period of redefining their vision of music from previous projects and a guitar riff from Liam, Too Many Times came to life to give us some early 2000s inspired rock which we all need. This debut track has the intensity we would expect from a rock band, we have a feeling we will be hearing a lot more from these guys once live music returns to our lives. We encourage all you rock fans to check out this exciting new band!
