A few weeks ago I’ve had the pleasure to discover this crazy talented quartet from Chicago who brought me back to the 90s with their raw energy and distorted guitars. KOALRA cover a lot of ground in the genres of punk, indie and noise pop. And they’re doing it so perfectly it’s almost like these guys were born to become the respectful successors of SONIC YOUTH.
After a prolific year where KOALRA released a 14 track full length called “The Wakes”, creativity didn’t stop chasing these musicians who are already working on their third album, “Into the Everything”. You know you just found out a band with the potential to make it when not only the band members have talent but they also put 100% effort into what they’re doing with passion and dedication.
YMX: Hey KOALRA, how is it going? some of our readers might not be familiar with your project, how would describe yourself, in a few words?
KOALRA: Yeah, it’s going well. Koalra pulls from a multitude of genres, from driving Post-Punk, to ethereal Dream Pop soundscapes. Experimentation with noise plays a key role in our songwriting process, and Shoegaze’s notorious wall of sound has been known to creep up from time to time.
YMX: Your current work is the result of a long journey; What first drew you to making music?
KOALRA: We got into punk a million years ago and wanted to join in on the fun and do all the stuff everyone else was doing. Also, we are music fanatics and have an insatiable urge to create it…all that stuff drew us in.
YMX: What would be your dream collaboration?
KOALRA: Rob Sonic and Crack Cloud. If those two made a song together that would be a dream collaboration.
YMX: You recently released “TORTURE”. Can you tell us how that project came about?
KOALRA: We just released a single called Torture. It’s the second single from our upcoming album called “Into the Everything”
YMX: What inspires your songwriting work?
KOALRA: I get inspired by other peoples music. I run across so many new bands on the daily that get me super pumped to keep trying to improve my own bands songs.
YMX: We are all missing live music at the moment. Once on the other side, which music venue would you choose for your first gig?
KOALRA: “On the other side” sounds like we’re all going to die. So I guess heaven?
YMX: What’s your band strategy in terms of music promotion? Direct-2-fans or via the “big dogs”?
KOALRA: Direct-2-fans obviously! We cater directly to our three friends who like our band.
YMX: Finally, what are your plans for the future? (releases, gigs etc.)
KOALRA: We have the “Torture” single that just came out. The full length called “Into the Everything” will be out April 2nd and we also are finishing up our next album as we speak.
