RIVIN – Distance Interview

Introducing RIVIN! this Berlin based pop artist dares to combine the melancholic feel of 2020 with the colourful vibes of the 80s in his latest track “Distance”. This track has been worked on by a few notable names in the pop genre such as producers Jineo (The Voice France) and CeePee (Little Mix, John Legend). Today we talk to RIVIN about this great new track!

YMX: Hi RIVIN, how is it going? some of our readers might not be familiar with your project, how would describe yourself, in a few words?

RIVIN: Hey, yes I am Italian, living in Berlin at the moment. I describe myself as a singer, songwriter and producer. This one is more a work in progress thing and I’m trying to learn as much as I can.

YMX: Your current work is the result of a long journey; What first drew you to making music?

RIVIN: Well I have started music at the age of 5, it was my grandma who put me in front of a piano and taught me how to read music. By the age of 10 I had my first music degree at the Conservatory. Music is in my DNA, my grandpa was a composer. I have explored all kind of genres though. I’m classical trained, I have sang old arias, musical, you name it. Today pop music is what I do.

YMX: What would be your dream collaboration?

RIVIN: David Bowie, for sure.

YMX: You recently released “Distance”. Can you tell us how that song came about?

RIVIN: Yes, I wrote it back in April in Berlin during the first lockdown. I remember during those first weeks many songwriters were posting their Covid song, and most of the time, they weren’t much happy to be honest. I didn’t want to produce anything sad or melancholic though, but rather something dancy, energetic and fun, something definitely uplifting. That’s why, with my producer Jineo, we have decided to go full 80s and bring all its colors and good vibes to spice up the greyish feeling of 2020

YMX: – What inspires your songwriting work?

RIVIN: I am mainly a top liner, I always say gimme the beat I’ll give you a hit! I like writing hooks and memorable melody lines. When it comes to the lyrics, it’s usually quite autobiographic. Sometimes it’s definitely a healing process.

YMX: We are all missing live music at the moment. Once on the other side, which music venue would you choose for your first gig?

RIVIN: I love the Roundhouse in London, I hope I’ll be able to perform there one day.

YMX: What’s your band strategy in terms of music promotion? Direct-2-fans or via the “big dogs”?

RIVIN: Definitely both. But the big dogs.. well, they definitely need to be fed if you wanna grow your audience. As an indie artist you end up becoming more and more of a digital marketer.. Is it fun? No! But it has to be done.

YMX: Finally, what are your plans for the future? (releases, gigs etc.)

RIVIN: I am planning to release my first Album in September. I am still thinking about the title, it might be ‘Farewells’. As of the gigs, I’ve been contacted by Sessions Live, I’ll start doing online gigs very soon. It will be a first for me, we’ll see.
