Russian born, Andreev Andrey AKA Pheel Contrast [feat. Kate White (Ekaterina)] is a pop dance musician songwriter. In his lyrics, he speaks about modern social problems between people, presenting it in soft and melodic form with different guest performers. It’s about talking easily and melodically about complicated things.
‘Society demands people to be the best, to create illusions of their superiority over others […] and ‘We are’ is about how we don’t live our lives in this race. I want people to feel the contrast’
YMX: Hey Pheel, thanks for sitting down with us. What would you say to all our readers new to your project?
PHEEL: You can’t really know how wonderful things are until you see the contrast to when things weren’t so wonderful for a while. So feel the contrast in your life
YMX: When did you know that music was something you wanted to pursue at an artistic level?
PHEEL: The first time I realised that music changes the world was when I was 6 years old, then I said it out loud to my mother 🙂 And I was immediately sent to music school. And I didn’t regret it, at 14 my friends and I were playing Nirvana hits on our guitars, from 18 I was DJing, I did my first electronic project at 24, today I’m 30 something years old. In 2020 I released my first project release Pheel Contrast, in 2021 I will have five more new songs. I’m not going to stop.
YMX: You recently released ‘We are’. Can you tell us how that project came about?
PHEEL: I was inspired by dance music from the 2000s. And even though it’s not a trend now, I still wanted to make these songs. They rock me, and I know I’ll find a listener. That was the main motivation for writing these songs, not the race for a trendy sound)) It was more about getting my message across with lyrics and music that I like first and foremost.
YMX: What is the one thing you would like people to feel while listening to ‘We are’?
PHEEL: I would generally like all people to feel contrast in their lives. I want people to understand that there will always be contrast. If there is love, there will always be fear, if there is life, there will also be death, if there is youth, there will also be old age, indifference needs passion, pluses need minuses, and so on. All this is contrast! One without the other is the law of life. And it’s important to feel it, not alternately, but in one moment, all at once! It’s difficult, and I don’t know if it’s always possible to feel it, but I do know that in difficult emotional moments, this understanding gives you balance, and balance gives you a clearer picture of what you really want. Contrasts in our lives are what life is all about. That’s what [Occasion For] is about.
YMX: How did the recent pandemic influence your creative process? Is remote collaboration easy for you?
PHEEL: It’s temporary, I told myself. And like other artists, it actually gave me more time to refine my songs. And I was convinced again that it was just the contrast. I found the white in the black, the pluses in the minuses.
YMX: Do you feel more confident writing music alone, or within a team?
PHEEL: I do a lot of things myself, as I am a composer and performer of my own songs. But you always need people’s help, you can’t do everything yourself. Any artist needs a comment on their song, and those who give feedback on your songs are already on your team 🙂 Even if those comments upset you a bit. They’re actually helping you.
YMX: Can you name the last gig you played? Would you consider doing a livestream concert?
PHEEL: my first song came out in 2020, I can’t give a concert with just one song then. Now we have 6 songs and we will of course do a gig as early as spring 2021
YMX: Finally, what are your plans for the future? (releases, gigs etc.)
PHEEL: Releases concerts clips and films
