YMX: Hey Jason, thanks for talking to us. How have these gloomy times been treating you?
Jason: These times are another level. For an artist regardless of time, it is always a 24:7 hustle and I wasn’t going to let this stop me for being able to learn and grow. There has been such a big personal journey for me this last year. From everything being cancelled to seriously write myself in the narrative and manifesting my dreams and visions.
I love spending time by myself, so that was a positive, but creativity I hit a wall for a while and just got lazy in the beginning. Never the less this year allowed me to reconnect and rebuild and makes changes for myself and my support system.
I love, LOVE, and I am just all about spreading love and making the world a brighter better place. This year was dark but there is a light and I am creating to add more light and love into the world. It has not been easy but with the love and support I am now more than ever determined, motivated and just appreciative that I am lucky to be alive!
YMX: How did you decide music was something you wanted to pursue? Are there any particular episodes that inspired you in doing so?
Jason: I have always been creative! Music has been present throughout my whole life. I think being able to take it seriously was a long road as I had been really cultivating my craft but never had an access or clue about getting into the industry. Growing up a brown and queer with pressures from the Indian culture was a fight as it wasn’t seen as a viable option but I really pushed and made it strong that I had a place in the creative field and I can be a role model for others to follow and show it was possible. I vividly remember saying I wanted to be a singer songwriter and an aunty said to me repeated times ‘no you need to do maths, you need to be a doctor’, and little Jason at 6/7 was sassy and said ‘JUST YOU WATCH!’ and stormed out of the room. Do what makes you happy, and music makes me happy.
YMX: Here’s a fun game: name 3 artists, or bands, that inspire you and influence your work, and explain why:
Jason: Amy Winehouse – She is my musical inspiration, the depth of her lyrics, the way she performs and just transcends me to a different place. She touches my soul and takes you on a journey. She inspires me as she’s going on a journey in her songs and is just honest and truthful.
Lady Gaga – The strength of this woman and the fight she has in her is astronomical. She is not afraid to get experiment and creative and tell her story. She helped me through many times and really taught me and allowed me to go on a discovery of myself and be my authentic self. She is a talent and triple threat. Her life experiences are very parallel to my own. I don’t just consider myself a singer just like her, she is an artist who does multiple art forms, and like that I also consider myself an artist as I don’t just sing and write songs there is so much I am involved in creatively that is there. You don’t have to do one you can do it all.
QUEEN – This band really allowed me to find my soul and spirit growing up. They are so fun and bold and I am so here for it. They stood out and I always stood out in more ways than one. Queen are my OG, and funny enough I even played Galileo in We Will Rock You when I was 10. They bring out the rock, the energy and explosiveness in my personality and the fun and humour and quirkiness. Their music is iconic and timeless but you don’t need me to say that, and the effect is had on me shows.
YMX: You recently released new single “In My Heart” Can you tell us how that project came about?
Jason: My new single ‘In My Heart’ released on 4th Feb 2021. I wrote this before Covid (so over a year ago) and it finally got into fruition and finished when things started opening up again. This song is about warming someones heart, when you’re down and someone makes you smile, allowing you to relax and take that moment for yourself. We always compare ourselves to other and have ongoing battles about why he haven’t reached anything. Always rushing in a fast paced life to check a list. This imaginary race that people have created doesn’t exist. There is no race, it is you just loving life and making the most of the journey. Love, spread love, relax and SMILE.
YMX: How did the pandemic affect your personal music recording experience? Was it easy adjusting to working remotely?
Jason: I worked on this song with Flo The Producer who is fantastic and I love him with all my heart. He was just a soul that is vibrant. We actually did most of the recording before the first lockdown and then finished it when we could. It was long but nice as we came back with fresh eyes and allowed us to finesse the song how we wanted it too.
Working remotely has been eye opening and gained me more knowledge into making my own music and connecting with people online. I remember my first zoom songwriting session. It was so bizarre but now actually making a record remotely has been so fun and interesting and make working with people around the world more accessible. It has nothing over being face to face but it has been a learning curve and a fresh experience. I can’t say I hate because it has opened to doors for me.
YMX: Professional live-streams seem to be really taking over these days. Is it something you would consider doing?
Jason: I was hesitant in the beginning but I am actually going to be doing a livestream soon. I caved in but I am super excited for it and you always have to experience something. Never judge it before you’ve done it.
YMX: Since pandemic began, online music promotion has become crucial for an artist’s growth. How important is that for you, and are there any strategies you are willing to share with our readers?
Jason: Online music promotion is so crucial, and very overwhelming as well. It’s one thing making music but getting it heard wow, another ball game. I would say really connect with people and do your research, it’s networking and appreciating what others have to offer and what your music offers. Be smart when reaching out to people. I looked at my family and friends creating and uniting to really market it and bringing a strong awareness of my music to the people we knew first and then sharing it to more and more organically.
YMX: Finally, what are your plans for the future Jason?
Jason: Their will be music from me consistently this year, which I am excited about, with live streaming and hopefully when everything eases up I can confirm gigs too.
YMX: Well we are very excited to hear all of your new releases! Thanks for the chat Jason!
