Bexsta is a singer and songwriter from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, who has been singing since the age of 8. The singer writes her lyrics thinking that then her listeners can find themselves in her words and can relate with her songs. Her new song “Sacrilege” is about love and the impossibility of being with the person you really want, despite the love… Bexsta uses the music to express herself and share with her listeners her life. Writing has always been so fundamental for her, that now she wants us to know her inner world. During this year Bexsta is going to release three new songs, so stay tuned and follow the singer!
YMX: Hey BEX, thanks for talking to us. How have these gloomy times been treating you?
BEX: Hiya! To be fair having 2 kiddies, I’ve been kept busy. Keeping them entertained and educated along with the Christmas festivities, overall we have been lucky and have managed to stay as safe as possible.
YMX: How did you decide music was something you wanted to pursue? Are there any particular episodes that inspired you in doing so?
BEX: Music has always been a huge part of my life growing up and entering into adulthood music gave me a way of expressing myself and most recently I’ve thrown myself into exploring my own creativity and have branched out by writing my own songs about life, as a way to reflect and come to terms with what the hell is going off in my world as well as others’ world. Facing a real childhood trauma at the age of 8 has eventually (after some tough times) lead me to making the best out of it through lyric and I have finally come to realise that creating art from an experience makes me the winner!
YMX: Here’s a fun game: name 3 artists, or bands, that inspire you and influence your work, and explain why:
BEX: Lady Gaga – her passion for people , diversity and storytelling.
Pink- her family is at the heart of what she does, celebrates uniqueness and puts on an amazing show!
Elvis – his velvety voice, stage presence and genuine kindness.
YMX: You recently released “Sacrilege”. Can you tell us how that project came about?
BEX: My first release in Dec 2020 was Sacrilege. It was a song I had written early in 2020. I wrote it thinking about people in the past , present and I am sure future who are unable (for whatever reason) to be with the person they love. Our world has seen too many occasions when scenarios such as family values get in the way of true love, many people have been unable to be together due to prejudice, circumstance etc. Sacrilege is a sort of rebellious lure – about wanting to be with a person yet not being able to. I have a NEW SINGLE coming out soon! called At Last I See The Light. I am so excited for this one! It’s a dancey one which I have written based on my own life so far. It delves into how I felt about myself growing up and the dark times faced. But then booms into the most positive outcome ever! I wrote this to hopefully inspire and empower anyone out there who can relate to the verses of this song – to know that they will too will absolutely find their own light. It took me over 20 years to finally find mine. It’s worth the effort and your worth it!
YMX: How did the pandemic affect your personal music recording experience? Was it easy adjusting to working remotely?
BEX: I was hoping to get into the studio to record At Last I See The Light but due to the numerous lockdowns – this hadn’t happened. My hubby bought me a home recording kit in April 2020 so I have used this and have been so lucky to have met Rob @soundmindbeats in 2019 (based in the USA) via Instagram who has worked with me to create the tunes so far! I am based in Doncaster, South Yorkshire UK – so working remotely is what we do!
YMX: Professional livestreams seem to be really taking over these days. Is it something you would consider doing?
BEX: I would love to do this!
YMX: Since pandemic began, online music promotion has become crucial for an artist’s growth. How important is that for you, and are there any strategies you are willing to share with our readers?
BEX: I’ll be truthfully honest about this! This is something I am trying to improve on myself. I defo need to get better at this. So far all I have done is post , post and post some more. Instagram (I’ve realised putting regular stories on is a good thing) Facebook and Twitter – get them linked up too! I am still getting used to it myself so learning all the time!
YMX: Finally, what are your plans for the future?
BEX: I want to work towards an Album this year! So only going to release some of the tunes over the course of the year and see how I go! This album is my Self Acceptance Album. I would love to grow my following and I hope if I can help anyone with what I do – then that’s my goal! Time will tell about getting ‘out out’ there dependant on these uncertain times. I gigged for 10 years In pubs, clubs, weddings and for charity which I loved during my late teens and 20’s – I wanna gig the festivals when the world allows it!!!!! I wouldn’t turn down the Brits either! 😜
