Italian-American songstress Mayfair Lady recently released her debut single, ‘If I Got Rich’. Joined by a haunting and cinematic instrumental, the song really blossoms during the chorus, an incredible piece of writing that will instantly stuck into the listener’s head. A talented songwriter and composer, not to forget a gifted live performer, Mayfair Lady seems to be on a raising path to a brilliant future. Keen to find out more about her artistic universe, we sat down with the talented musician to ask her some question. Here’s what happened.
YMX: Hey Mayfair Lady, thanks for sitting down with us. What would you say to all our readers new to your project?
ML: I am very thankful to be able to share some thoughts with you on my debut single ”If I Got Rich”. It’s a song that has been in the making for a few months now and I’m so glad to have released it so that people all over the world are now able to listen to it. If you are a fan of Amy Winehouse, Lana del Rey and LP – I think you will like my style and enjoy listening to my song. ‘If I Got Rich’ is about ambition and constant pursuit to achieve our individual goals, whatever they may be – a message we can all relate to. The lyrics depict a complex and destructive relationship between two female protagonists – a young, aspiring artist (myself as Grace) and a glamorous and affluent socialite (myself as Mayfair Lady). There is, however, an underlined meaning behind the lyrics, story and message that the song is trying to covey. While the young artist represents myself, she also represents the insecurities that hinder us in our pursuit of success. Similarly, the wealthy socialite not only represents my stage alter-ego, but also an individual goal that we all have and strive so much to achieve. So the song conveys a universal message of the pursuit of our ultimate goal and the length that we are ready to go, to obtain it.
YMX: When did you know that music was something you wanted to pursue at an artistic level?
ML: All my life. I’ve been playing the piano and singing since I was four years old, and I started writing my own songs when I was about 10. It took me a while to actually take myself seriously as a musician and to start working towards my music career goals, but I am firmly fixed on them now. Releasing my first single, ”If I Got Rich” is definitely a huge accomplishment for me.
YMX: You recently released the dark-pop gem ‘If I Got Rich’. Can you tell us how that project came about?
ML: The song was inspired by my experience, as a singer-songwriter, trying to make a mark in a competitive world of music industry; the hardships that I had to face, the failures I had to endure and the strength I had to find to overcome them. I wrote this song shortly before the first lockdown in the UK (March 2020) and I didn’t think much of it at first; I never thought I would release it as my first single. But then, I got into the lyrics and melody more and I recorded a demo which I then shared with my friend and producer Alejandro. We met up at the studio to record the vocals and the fundamental instruments and continued working on the song, remotely, over the lockdown period. When I realised the song has great potential, I decided to make a music video for it, which was shot in the summer, once the lockdown regulations were eased, with the help of some wonderful people that I am proud to call ‘my team’. The video will be out in the first week of January 2021.
YMX: What is the one thing you would like people to feel while listening to the track?
ML: I want my listeners to feel like they’re in a 007 movie! I want everyone to really feel the epic sounds we went for, and the build-up of the song from start to finish. One of my main goals, when writing, recording and producing my music, is to achieve big, epic, cinematic sounds. Why? Because I love movies and the way they move you and can take you on profound emotional journeys. I think our lives are like our own movies, and you’ve got to have a great soundtrack to go with your movie. That’s why I want to make music like that.
YMX: How did the recent pandemic influence your creative process? is remote collaboration easy for you?
ML: I tried to be as productive as possible throughout the lockdown. I was working hard to complete my studies ( I just finished an MA in Songwriting), and focusing on writing new songs and recording more demos. Alejandro and I have a great friendship and working relationship so it was easy for us to keep collaborating and working remotely. In any case, you have to always try and make the most of every situation, whatever industry or profession you are in. I am proud of how I used my time at home during the pandemic to try and grow my existing skills and acquire new ones.
YMX: Do you feel more confident writing music alone, or within a team?
ML: From a young age, I preferred writing on my own, as most of my songs reflect my personal thoughts and experiences. However, a part of growing as a songwriter and composer, is learning to work with others and draw inspirations from external influences. So I am constantly working on incorporating both.
YMX: Can you name the last gig you played? Would consider doing a livestream concert?
ML: My last performance was at The Wellington Club in Mayfair, almost one year ago… oh my goodness, time flies! I supplemented the lack of performances with livestreams, throughout the lockdown, and I plan to carry on until I am allowed to play live again, which I hope will be sooner rather than later.
YMX: Finally, what are your plans for the future?
ML: The music video for ”If I Got Rich” will be coming out on the 1st week of January 2021. I also plan to release more singles throughout 2021. All songs are quite unique and different, so my listeners can expect to be surprised. I miss the stage a lot and I plan on taking over a nice London venue for a reunion show, as soon as I am able to do that. Fingers crossed!
